In the context of (inter)national legislation, the Netherlands Coastguard is as a national Search and Rescue organization required to carry out exercises with the ferry services transporting passengers between the Netherlands and England at least once a year. This requirement is met by means of ‘paper’ exercises (referred to as MAREX) and live exercises (LIVEX). This exercise brings together representatives of all authorities involved in an incident or calamity involving a ferry to practice, discuss and evaluate a scenario.
The evacuation is actually practiced once every five years. During a LIVEX, a mass evacuation of a ferry is practiced with the aid of (life) boats and helicopter(s). The next LIVEX is scheduled for 25 May 2019.
